Pain in the lower left abdomen can be a symptom of a number of different diseases and conditions, some of which are completely unique to women. Much of a woman’s reproductive system is located in this area of her body and many conditions related to pain in this region are related to these systems and require specialized and careful treatment. However fortunately many causes of this left lower abdominal pain in females are also very treatable and not too serious.

Left Lower Abdominal Pain in Females: Ovarian Cysts – Ovarian cysts develop for no particular reason in most women and are for the most part benign. If the left ovary is affected one of the signs that the condition is present will be a sharp pain, often very sudden it its onset, in the left lower abdomen.

Much of the time after an ovarian cyst has been diagnosed, usually by way of a simple ultrasound, the condition will just be monitored by a medical professional as many of these cysts resolve on their own in a few days. In order to help the patient stand the pain pain medication is usually prescribed.

If the ovarian cyst does not resolve then laproscopic surgery is usually required. This involves very small incisions so it is minimally invasive and most women recover form such a surgery in a short time. usually a biopsy is performed on the excised cyst to make sure that it is not cancerous. Should that turn out to be the case a whole different set of treatments must begin including the possibility of removing the affected ovary altogether.

Left Lower Abdominal Pain in Females: Ectopic Pregnancy – During the early stages of a normal pregnancy once an egg has been fertilized it will travel down the Fallopian tubes to implant itself in the womb to grow. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy this does not occur however and for reasons that are still unclear much of the time the fetus stops its journey and begins to form in the Fallopian tubes, or even occasionally the ovary. There are certain risk factors doctors believe put women at a greater risk of ectopic pregnancy including smoking, prior surgeries in the area that have left scarring and being over the age of 35 but the condition can occur in any woman.

In this case the pregnancy is not viable but the fetus must be removed as it is a threat to the female’s life as if a rupture occurs severe bleeding and shock can follow. The left sided abdominal pain associate with ectopic pregnancy is also often accompanied by lower back pain, nausea, dizziness, fainting and unexpected vaginal bleeding.

The procedure to remove an ectopic pregnancy is usually a minimally invasive surgery that removes the malformed fetal matter. in some cases the affected Fallopian tube may have to be removed as well.

Left Lower Abdominal Pain in Females: Endometriosis – This is a painful condition that involves the abnormal growth of womb tissue outside the womb. it is normal that every month the body of a woman of child bearing age will cause the cells in the lining of the womb to thicken to prepare for a possible pregnancy. A period is the result of these cells being expelled from the body.

Endometriosis occurs when these womb cells grow outside the womb instead. The left lower abdominal pain in females (which can occur on the right as well, depending upon the location of the “rogue” cells) is usually accompanied by severe bleeding during periods and women suffering from the condition often have a difficult time conceiving. Pain medications, hormone treatments and surgery are all options but OB GYN doctors base treatment decisions on each individual case.

Left Lower Abdominal Pain in Men

There are also a couple of reasons for left sided abdominal pain that are unique to men. Prostate problems of various kinds , including prostate cancer, can cause this kind of pain as well as a condition called varicocele. Varicocele is an abnormal compression of the testicles that can cause severe pain throughout the whole lower body. Both conditions are usually managed and treated by a urologist.

Most people experience pain in the lower left abdomen at least occasionally. Ranging from a sharp stabbing pain to a nagging ache that simply won’t go away rather than being a problem in itself left lower abdomen pain is usually a symptom of something else, sometimes something simple and relatively uncomplicated like constipation or something far worse up to and including bowel cancer.

The area of the body referred to as the lower left abdomen actually covers a number of organs located in the same region including:

The lower part of the kidneys

The sigmoid colon and part of the bowel

Large blood vessels including the aorta

A section of the bladder

Ovaries in women.

Because there is so much “going on” in this region of the body lower left abdominal pain can be a symptom of a number of different health conditions and diseases. These include:

Food Poisoning – Food poisoning is unfortunately more common than people think. The stomach after eating is a first sign which is often then followed by nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. Mild cases of food poisoning will usually clear up on their own in about 48 hours but if a person’s fever gets very high, they become dehydrated or they are simply not improving after 24 hours then medical treatment should be sought.

Constipation - Most people do not like to talk about symptoms of constipation out of embarrassment. Although it sounds like a trivial issue constipation can be very painful and certainly a possible cause of pain in the left lower abdomen. Usually constipation goes away after a few days, helped by an increased intake in liquids (especially water) and occasionally an over the counter laxative.

Bowel Obstruction – People who have a bowel obstruction may be victims of chronic constipation and choose to ignore the increased abdominal pain they feel when the bowel becomes fully obstructed. When this occurs most people also experience severe nausea and vomiting as there is simply no other way for their bodies to expel waste. People who suspect they have a bowel obstruction should consult a doctor as soon as possible as at its most severe this is a condition that can cause death.

Diverticulitis - This is a very common cause of pain in the lower left abdomen and it tends to be a condition that will keep recurring unless a strict diet and exercise regime is followed after it is diagnosed. The abdominal pain is caused by an abnormal swelling in the walls of the bowel and may be accompanied by vomiting, nausea and rectal bleeding. Diverticulitis is most commonly treated with a course of antibiotics and following a low fiber diet that avoids nut products.

Crohn’s Disease – Crohn’s Disease is a chronic illness that there is no current cure for but it can be managed to a certain extent after diagnosis by diet changes and certain medications. Pain is often not just restricted to the lower left abdomen, it often radiates across the entire abdominal area. The symptoms of another digestive illness – irritable bowel syndrome – are similar as well and it requires a colo rectal specialist to diagnose and treat either condition.

Kidney Stones – Manly people who have experienced kidney stones describe the accompanying abdominal pain – not restricted to the left lower abdomen depending upon the location of the stone – as the most severe pain they have ever felt. In most cases doctors will leave the patient to pass the kidney stone by themselves, just offering pain management until that occurs.

In severe cases when 48 hours or more have elapsed and the stone is still intact ultrasound treatment to break up the kidney stone may be administered or in rarer cases actual surgery is required.

Aortic Aneurysm – The aorta is a very large blood vessel that can become swollen and distended, causing blood leakages and occasionally a rupture that can prove fatal. Left side abdominal pain is one of the only symptoms of this condition and often it is not diagnosed without an ultrasound.

The surgery required to repair the damage is in itself rather risky so many doctors will monitor an aortic aneurysm and only recommend surgery if the leakage increases to the point where a rupture is far more likely.

Left Side Abdominal Pain in Women – There are certain causes of left sided abdominal pain that are unique to women. One of the more common is an ovarian cyst which can cause severe and constant stomach pain that is very sharp. This condition is usually diagnosed by an ultrasound and in many cases no immediate treatment is offered as many ovarian cysts resolve on their own. In women where this does not occur laproscopic surgery is recommended, followed by a biopsy of the excised cyst to ensure that it is benign and not cancerous.

An ectopic pregnancy is another possible cause of left abdominal pain in women. This occurs when a fetus does not travel to the womb as it should but instead begins to grow in the ovaries or fallopian tubes.

This can be a fatal condition for the pregnant woman, who will often not be aware she is pregnant as this tends to occur within the first ten weeks of pregnancy. Seeking medical treatment if a female experiences abdominal pain, often with nausea and shoulder pain as well as vaginal bleeding or spotting is a must.

Most of us have experienced stomach pain after eating when we have over indulged, that uncomfortable feeling when you begin to regret that second helping or having chosen to have dessert after all. For some people though it is far more of a problem than that and is in fact such a regular occurrence that they begin to dread mealtimes at all.

The Pain That Makes Mealtimes a Misery

Abdominal pain is never pleasant and when it occurs after you have had a nice meal it is even more of a misery. It may come in the form of a sharp pain that almost takes your breath away or it may come as a dull ache. Sometimes it may feel as though you are so full of gas that it becomes painful to breathe and the abdomen might even become swollen and bloated looking. Some people who have a problem with pain in the stomach after eating commonly experience a combination of these symptoms and get the point where they begin to avoid eating at all just so they do not have to go through another miserable few hours in pain.

Why Does My Stomach Hurt?

There can be a number of reasons why a person might experience stomach pain after eating. Some are short term conditions that will goaway after a few days while others are more serious, sometimes even chronic. Here is some information about the most common reasons why people experience abdominal pain after they eat:

Gastroenteritis – Also known as the stomach flu this is a painful , sometimes very painful, virus that is made worse when you eat, even if you only eat a small amount. Apart from pain people with stomach flu often experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Stomach Ulcers – A stomach ulcer occurs when the soft tissue in the lining of the abdomen is eroded away, often by acidic foods. Eating certain foods can cause a stomach ulcer to “flare up”, resulting in pain that can become very intense.

Lactose Intolerance – There are some people who find, mainly because they experience stomach pain after eating, that certain dairy products just do not “agree with them”. a person with lactose intolerance will usually experience abdominal pain after they eat these foods, which include foods made with a lot of milk or cheese, desserts or pizza for example, and not just the obvious culprits like a glass of milk or a slice of cheese.

Celiac Disease – People with celiac disease experience stomach pain and other nasty symptoms like severe bloating, gas and constipation when they eat food that contain gluten. Unfortunately for them lots of foods contain gluten, especially wheat based products which accounts for a great many foods other than bread.

Food Poisoning – Food poisoning is a very unpleasant cause of stomach pain after eating and can even be life threatening, especially if the “victim” is a young child or an older person. Food usually becomes tainted by poor storage or food handling methods, often before the person who consumes it even buys it. In addition to stomach pain people suffering from food poisoning will often also experience vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

Poor Eating Patterns – If a person goes for hours without eating a thing when they finally do sit down to a meal they find that they begin to experience abdominal pain not to long after they finish eating, as the sudden influx of food after a long period without is literally a shock to your stomach! Overeating will often cause the same result.

Preventing Stomach Pain After Eating

There are ways to treat the various causes of abdominal pain experienced after eating but as the old saying goes prevention is always better than the cure. To avoid catching stomach flu you should get into the habit of washing your hands more frequently especially before your leave the bathroom and before and after meals. There is not too much you can do about stomach flu if you do catch it though except eat light foods and drink plenty of fluids.

To avoid food poisoning you should always make sure that the food you eat is handled and cooked properly. Undercooked meats are a big cause of food poisoning so you should ensure that all the meat you eat is cooked all the way through. If you are going to save leftover food to eat later it should always be properly stored and remember to check the expiry dates on food you have had in the house for a while before you eat it.

In the case of people who suffer from more chronic stomach problems like celiac disease and stomach ulcers a change in what they eat can do the most to help prevent recurring stomach aches. Those with celiac disease should consult with a nutritionist to plan a gluten free diet and people suffering from stomach ulcers should avoid very spicy or acidic foods.

Stomach Pain After Eating and Food Types

Some people only experience stomach pain after a meal if that meal has included certain foods. This can include:

Fiber Filled Foods: We all need a regular intake of fiber to maintain a healthy digestive system and many people do not eat enough. eating a lot of fibrous foods in one sitting can be a problem as well though as all that extra fiber can lead to a nasty stomach ache as your body struggles to deal with it.

Seafood – If you regularly experience abdominal pain after eating certain sea foods then that is a good indicator that you have an allergy. an allergic reaction to seafood tends to cause an inflammation of the stomach lining and intestines, leading to the pain.

Peanuts – Peanut allergies are becoming more and more common, so much so that some schools in the US have banned that old kids’ favorite peanut butter because it caused so many kids to have an allergic reaction, which in addition to stomach pain can result in more dangerous symptoms like airway swelling, making it hard for the person to breathe.

Beef - Some people find that eating beef, especially in larger quantities, cause stomach pain. This may be due to an allergy or as a reaction to the high levels of carbohydrates found in most beef, especially that which is fatty rather than lean.

Chicken - Although it is considered a lighter meat, some people experience stomach pain after they have consumed chicken. Although this too may be an allergy severe stomach pain after eating chicken, especially if it is accompanied by nausea or diarrhea may be an indication of food poisoning as undercooked chicken is one of the most common causes of food poisoning.

Every year thousands of children and adults spend a miserable few days suffering from what they (or their parents) believe is a sore throat. In more than 35% of those cases though the sort throat turns out to be something a little more unpleasant -strep throat.

Strep throat — known in medical terms as Streptococcal pharyngitis, streptococcal tonsillitis, or streptococcal sore throat — is an infection and if and when strep throat symptoms are diagnosed as the disease then in most cases the patient needs to be treated with antibiotics before it will go away.

Contents:

Strep Throat FAQs

Strep Throat Symptoms

It can be hard to determine whether someone has strep throat rather than a sore throat related to a cold or flu virus as some of the symptoms are very similar. In general though the symptoms of strep throat include:

Severe and very painful sore throat without other symptoms of a cold like sneezing, sniffling or coughing

Difficulty swallowing

A marked fever

Tender or even swollen lymph nodes in the neck

Yellowish or white patches on the tonsils, visible to the naked eye.

General malaise, nausea and sometimes vomiting.

A skin rash, a condition that is known as scarlet fever

Top↑

Symptoms in children and adults do differ somewhat. While it is rare for streptococcal tonsillitis to occur in young babies it strikes toddlers quite hard. Toddlers will often complain of abdominal pain and a difficulty swallowing as well as a sore throat. If they run a fever of 101 or above it is also a good indicator that the symptoms they are displaying are strep throat symptoms as a lower fever is more common with viral infections like colds.

Older kids and teens are often the hardest hit when streptococcal throat infection occurs. Their throat pain tends to be worse as so symptoms of strep throat like lymph node swelling and fever.

Step throat is usually a child’s disease, occuring most often in the 5-15 age group but adults can, and do, contract it, but in a milder form.

Top↑

Diagnosing Strep Throat

As previously, mentioned it can be very hard for the layman to distinguish between sore throat symptoms and strep throat symptoms so a visit to the doctor for diagnostic testing is really called for.

These days there are several ways that a case of strep throat can be diagnosed:

Throat Culture — For decades a throat culture, obtaining by swabbing the back of a patients throat and then sending the sample to a lab for testing, has been the standard tool for diagnosing strep throat. While accurate it can take up to two days for the results to come in.

Rapid Antigen Testing — Rapid antigen testing is used in many doctors’ offices these days as it offers immediate results, allowing a physician to start a patient’s treatment right away. The test looks for antigens (foreign bodies) in a sample, indicating the presence of strep throat. The downside of this test is that it can miss a case of streptococcal throat infection that is in the early stages so many doctors still order a throat culture anyway if a patient seems to be displaying strep throat symptoms but the antigen test comes up negative.

DNA Testing — Rapid DNA testing is fast and as accurate as a throat culture in diagnosing sore throat symptoms as strep throat or not. It is expensive though and not widely available at the moment.

Top↑

Strep Throat Treatment

Usually if testing determines that a patient does indeed have streptococcal throat infection then they will be prescribed a course of antibiotics. Parents should note that antibiotics will only help cure strep throat, they are useless against a sore throat, which is the result of a virus and doctors should not be asked to prescribe antibiotics if a strep throat test is negative, as the over prescription of antibiotics is a real problem these days.

Top↑

Sore Throat or Strep Throat?

Especially for busy parents distinguishing between a sore throat and possible strep throat that requires a visit to the doctor. In general though an alogorithm like this can help:

Are the child’s lymph nodes swollen or tender? A yes to this question increases the likelihood that the sore throat symptoms are actually strep throat symptoms.

Are there exudates (yellow or white spots) on the tonsils or back of the throat? These are almost always present when a patient has strep throat.

Does the patient have a fever of over 101? The higher the fever the more likely that a patient has strep, rather than just a sore throat.

Is the patient also sneezing, sniffling and coughing? These symptoms tend to indicate a viral infection like a cold instead.

Top↑

Strep Throat FAQs

People have lots of questions about strep throat, especially parents. Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked:

Is strep throat infectious? - In a word yes, if children and adults are in close contact with one another. It can also be spread by sneezing and coughing.

When should you see a doctor about what you think are strep throat symptoms? – If you have gone through the algorithm above and it seems likely that the patient has strep throat symptoms rather than sore throat symptoms they should be taken to their doctor for testing. Left untreated streptococcal throat infection can lead to other complications.

Do only children get strep throat? – It is most common in children but adults can contract it, especially if they have children who have already been diagnosed with strep throat. The severity of strep throat in adults is usually milder than in children but ideally a doctor should still be consulted and testing carried out.

How can you avoid catching strep throat? – Good hygiene at all times is the best protection against strep throat. Frequent hand washing is always a good idea and you should avoid close contact with an infected person. A good diet helps boost the immune system so plenty of fruits and vegetables are essential as well.

The first decision that a patient who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and advised to try CPAP – continuous positive airway pressure – treatment is choosing which of the various machines for administering treatment that are available might work best for them. A patient will often be advised to try renting a CPAP machine before they buy one to make sure the CPAP treatment is suitable for them.

If that turns out to be the case most people then find that purchasing their own CPAP equipment makes sense. Here are a few CPAP machine reviews that you may find useful if you are trying to determine the best one for you:

Sandman Intro CPAP – This auto CPAP machine reviews very well as it is a very lightweight model, making it ideal for those who need a device that is easily portable, those who intend to travel with it for instance.

The best CPAP reviews are beginning to feature this newer CPAP machine as a popular choice because it packs a number of useful extra features into a compact and easy to use machine. It has a heated humidifier function, which features HumidControl, a system the manufacturers say can sense the humidity in the bedroom and adjust its own accordingly so that the patient can get the best possible night’s sleep.

The Sandman Intro also has a number of clinical monitoring features that help a patient track their own progress and it even reminds its owner when a filter will need to be changed soon or if the CPAP mask being used with the machine is not functioning properly. This model is especially suitable for those who are just beginning continuous positive airway pressure therapy, or who are retuning to it after trying CPAP alternatives as it is very easy to use and very quiet and unobtrusive.

As is the case with most CPAP machines what CPAP mask you choose to use with the Sandman Intro CPAP machine is entirely up to you. Checking a few good CPAP masks reviews might be helpful in making that decision.

Remstar Pro M Series with Cflex – To obstructive sleep apnea sufferers Remstar is a well known and much respected name in the CPAP industry and appears often in CPAP machine reviews. This new model in their bestselling M Series line is designed to be the best one yet, combining ease of use with a number of beneficial extras.

It has enhanced monitoring and reporting features to help a patient monitor their own progress during the CPAP treatment process. This particular model is available with or without humidification depending upon a patient’s individual preference and also boasts an automatic altitude adjustment function.

This popular model is also designed to be very portable, boasting a travel case that is lightweight and sleek and can be used with batteries if no suitable electrical outlet is available. This is however one of the more expensive models available so a rental period may be advisable before you buy to see how well it works for you.

SleepstyleTM 200 CPAP Series by Fisher & Paykel – This is another higher end model produced by another of the best known names in the PAP machine business Fisher & Paykel. This machine is sold initially as a rather basic model but a separate humidification kit can be purchased. The biggest selling points of this CPAP machine are its accurate and detailed reporting features which really helps in effectively treating obstructive sleep apnea and its Ambient Tracking Plus feature which, when used with a humidifier, monitors the external air and adjusts its own humidification output to provide the patient with increased comfort. As has been mentioned in many CPAP machine reviews It is also one of the quietest devices on the market, a quality that both a patient and their sleeping partner will really appreciate.

The most common misconception people have about sciatica is that it is a disease or a disorder. In fact it’s only a symptom of another underlying disorder that is affecting the sciatic nerves – herniated or bulging discs are common culprits but so is trauma caused by an accidental injury or a number of other things that often only able to be diagnosed by a neurologist. However as many of these conditions themselves are chronic ones, the sciatic pain has to be addressed and a course of sciatica treatment prescribed or recommended.

Recognizing and Sciatica Treatment at Home

Whatever the underlying cause might be the symptoms of sciatic pain are fairly recognizable. Pain that radiates from the lower back through the buttock area and down the leg are the hallmark signs of sciatic pain. It can be a sharp, stabbing pain or a dull ache and can appear quite suddenly.

There are a number of sciatica treatment exercises that you can try to provide a certain amount of immediate relief and these exercises are the most common form of treatment of sciatica at home. These exercises are not complicated, they usually consist of stretches and brisk walking but for many people these home remedies do not always help much. For some a hot or cold pack can bring at least temporary sciatic nerve pain relief but if the pain persists it is time to see a doctor to discuss more powerful treatment.

Medical Treatments

Many people find that home treatments do little to help their sciatica and the pain begins to affect their daily lives, so they seek advice about sciatic nerve pain relief from their doctor. Often that treatment will involve the patient being prescribed an anti inflammatory medication that can be effective and narcotics are prescribed in severe cases, but only for a short time. Some anti depressants have also been found to be effective for some as it is believed they block pain messages from being sent to the brain.

For chronic sciatica some people also try epidural steroid shots, especially if their biggest problem is severe lower back pain, while others find that physical therapy helps as well as actually getting treatment for the underlying cause of their sciatica. For example if the sciatic nerve pain is being caused by a herniated disc, surgery can often solve the problem permanently.

Risk Factors

Although sciatica can affect anyone there are certain risk factors that can make a persons’ likelihood of developing it much higher. Those who sit for a long time – office workers for example- or those who have jobs that require a lot of heavy lifting are more likely to suffer from this symptoms and the older you get the higher the risk of developing sciatica and sciatic nerve pain as the discs in your back naturally degrade as you age.

Many people live for years with sleep apnea without ever realizing they have it. They often know (or have been told) that they have a tendency to snore loudly and they know that for some reason they can’t quite understand getting a good night’s sleep is almost impossible. A diagnosis of sleep apnea answers many of these questions but leads to a new set. Many doctors will recommend that a newly diagnosed sleep apnea sufferer try continuous positive airway pressure treatment, prescribing them a special machine to administer that treatment. But the new question is just what is a CPAP machine and how can it help relieve their sleep apnea symptoms?

The Basic Functions

You need a CPAP – continuous positive airway pressure- machine in order to begin treatment. These machines fall into the category of durable medical equipment and you do need a physician’s prescription to get one. There is not just one single kind of them and choosing the best one out of all of them can be quite a challenge.

Although many sleep apnea patients do eventually buy their own CPAP equipment it often helps to begin treatment by renting one from a durable medical equipment provider so that a patient has the chance to see how well it suits them and even try a different machine if one seems not to be working for them. What they may think are bad CPAP machine side effects may simply be that the model of machine they are using is just not the right one for them. It is something that should be discussed with a doctor before giving up and looking for CPAP alternatives.

Most CPAP devices are about the size of a shoebox. Every one of them comes with a CPAP mask of some kind (there are many different kinds of these masks available) a tube that connects the mask to the machine. CPAP machine itself contains a motor that pumps are into the tube. That air is then blown down the patient’s throat as they sleep, keeping their airways open and hopefully reducing the incidents of apnea they experience every night.

Options

When an obstructive sleep apnea sufferer is making the decision about which CPAP machine they should use they should focus on looking for features they know they need, or even just want, in it. Options include special carrying cases, battery back up and the ability for the machine to be used with a foreign electrical current, all features that someone who intends to travel with their CPAP machine regularly would need but rather unnecessary if it is only ever going to be used at home.

Different devices also offer different functions. Some have CPAP humidifiers that many patients find provides a more comfortable CPAP treatment, while others are capable of ramping, the term for a gradual increase in pressure as needed. There are models that have a monitoring function that allows a patient to monitor the number of apneas they experience every night so that they can see just how well treatment is working and there are even CPAP machines that come in designer colors so that you can match your bedroom décor!

When a person is first diagnosed with sleep apnea they are often advised to begin a trial pf CPAP treatment right away. CPAP – continuous positive airway pressure – machines are very effective for many people but they are rather cumbersome and some patients simply find them impossible to deal with and give up and go back to leaving their sleep apnea untreated – putting them back at an increased risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. For these patients exploring CPAP alternatives for sleep apnea is a must.

What are the sleep apnea CPAP alternatives?

For those who have spent their time reading CPAP mask reviews and just do not like the idea of sleeping this way every night just does not appeal or they have tried CPAP therapy with no success surgery may be an alternative.

The surgery performed to help relieve sleep apnea symptoms -and in some extreme cases may be used to answer the “how to stop snoring” dilemma – usually involves removing excess tissues from the airways and can even involve reshaping the jaw. Several small procedures may also be called for to shrink all tissues and pain can persist for several weeks. Whether or not a person is a suitable candidate for sleep apnea surgery is a decision they have to consider carefully with their doctor.

General lifestyle changes can also be a great help in alleviating if not actually treating sleep apnea symptoms. Those who are overweight can notice an improvement in their symptoms just by losing a few pounds (which is good for their overall health as well) and stopping smoking can make a huge difference as well if that is something a sleep apnea patient still does. Limiting alcohol intake can help as well as alcohol has a sedative effect that can make airway obstructions even more acute.

There are also a number of alternative or homeopathic treatments that some people try to help alleviate some of their sleep apnea symptoms. One of the most popular of them is what is known as the Bach Flower Remedy, which has been in use for over a century now across the world. While there are a great many different Bach Flower Remedies the one recommended for those who suffer from sleep apnea is the Olive Treatment which is said to promote relaxation and more restful sleep.

Combining CPAP and Alternatives to CPAP

Although many patients do find that CPAP helps relieve their sleep apnea well it rarely ever solves the problem completely. For even better results though many patients combine their CPAP usage with some of the CPAP alternatives detailed above. Many of the alternatives, like giving up smoking and alcohol, improve general health as well, which in turn helps those with sleep apnea decrease their symptoms and get a better and more restful night’s sleep.

One of the biggest challenges many people encounter in using a CPAP machine to relieve sleep apnea effectively is finding the CPAP mask that suits them. Sleeping with any kind of apparatus on your face takes some getting used to say the least but using a CPAP mask that you are comfortable with goes a long way towards making the CPAP treatment far easier to deal with. Here are some CPAP mask reviews that you might find helpful if you are still trying to make that choice:

Respironics Comfort Gel Mask – if you are reading through various CPAP mask reviews this is a mask that will come up often as it one that is commonly issued as standard with many CPAP machines. One of the big advantages of this mask is that it is not too large and the gel conforms very well to comfortably fit an individual’s unique face shape. The headgear that keeps the mask in place as the patient sleeps is easy adjustable and soft, which is a big bonus.

Fisher Paykel Opus Nasal Pillow Mask – Fisher Paykel is another very well known name in the CPAP industry and this is one of their most popular models in many of the CPAP mask reviews you might read. The pillow design allows for a great deal of nocturnal movement on the patient’s part without the mask being displaced in any way and many people really like the freedom that the pillow design gives them as their face is not over obscured which can be the case with some other models.

SleepWeaver Advance Soft Cloth CPAP Mask– For some people the heavy plastic feel of many CPAP masks is more than they can become used to and because of the discomfort caused they begin to investigate CPAP alternatives even if the treatment itself is working well. A soft cloth mask like this one can be the answer for these people though. People who use this mask say that it does not become unpleasantly sticky like some plastic CPAP masks can and it is free of clumsy buckles that annoy some people a great deal.

On the downside this mask is one of the most expensive options available but as it is fully machine washable it should last for quite a long while, making it worth the extra investment. Also some people tend to feel rather smothered by the cloth over their nose and mouth although the fabric is fully ventilated.

Golife Nasal Mask Pillow – This Respironics CPAP mask comes in two versions – one designed for men and one for women, and consistently scores high marks in CPAP machine reviews and CPAP mask reviews. The pillow mask leaves most of a patient’s face free from obstruction and the headgear is very comfortable to wear and does stay on better throughout the night than some other models, something that many people, especially those with longer hair, do have a problem with.

To someone who has never really seen one before a CPAP machine and its accompanying CPAP masks can look rather scary and more than a little daunting. So for that matter can be the idea of being diagnosed with the condition that a CPAP machine is designed to treat- obstructive sleep apnea.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

In general sleep apnea is a relatively common disorder that basically results in pauses in a person’s usual breathing pattern while they are sleeping. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most commonly diagnosed form of the disorder and the one that most CPAP machines and masks are designed to treat. In the case of obstructive sleep apnea a blockage of the airway causes short pauses in breathing and noticeably shallow breathing. It also usually causes rather loud snoring.

Obstructive sleep apnea cannot be cured, it is a chronic disorder, but it can be treated and managed with great success. If left untreated sleep apnea can lead to an increase in a person’s risk for heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. It also makes getting sufficient sleep at night to be able to function properly during the day rather difficult, leading to daytime fatigue and an inability to concentrate and perform even the simplest of daily tasks.

How is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed?

Many people do not realize they suffer from sleep apnea and the condition is only diagnosed when they visit their doctor with a concern such as how to stop snoring, as that loud snore is one of the symptoms of sleep apnea that others can notice most.

Sleep Apnea is diagnosed by means of a sleep study, where a person spends the night at a sleep center and their vital signs are monitored for a set period of time. If the patient is indeed diagnosed with sleep apnea then they will usually be advised to undertake a CPAP trial and given a prescription to obtain the CPAP supplies they will need from a durable medical equipment supplier.

How Does CPAP Work?

CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure and it basically involves the use of a CPAP machine and mask that fits in various different ways over the nose and mouth that is to be worn every night during sleep. The machine gently blows regulated air into the throat and the pressure of that air keeps breathing passages open, relieving, for most people, the sleep apnea symptoms.

Most CPAP machines are very similar but there are a number of choices available to patients when it comes to CPAP masks. The Respironics CPAP mask range is very popular but far from the only choice. There is a CPAP full face mask option, a hybrid CPAP mask option and even nasal pillow masks to name but a few.

Many patients so find that they end up experimenting with several different kinds of CPAP mask before they find one that is suitable for them. This does not necessarily mean that one kind id better than another, just that personal comfort preferences will differ from person to person.
